The Ohio Conference of Community Development, an organization of 160 local governments administering programs to improve Ohio’s communities and make them more competitive, is developing a program to help communities adjust policies to emerging demographics on April 22, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza Columbus North-Worthington, 6500 Doubletree Avenue in Columbus.

Ohio’s declining and aging populations as well as reductions in revenues present extreme challenges to local government, especially to small and medium sized communities. The underlying themes of the April 22nd event are that communities must think regionally to marshal assets and reduce costs. Also the growing economic reality is jobs will go to and stay in communities that have a supply of educated willing workers that can add high value to the products and services generated.

Most local governments have relegated education to school boards and institutions of higher education resulting in a workforce with skills that do not match the skills needed by Ohio employers. Chancellor Carey will attend - shsaring his knowledge and vision to help convince local governments that it will take all elements of a community, both private and public, to generate the employees needed for the jobs to sustain and improve the quality of Ohio’s communities.
