OCCD Summer Annual Conference

July 01, 2026

Summer Meeting: Building on Our Foundation and Looking Ahead

Summer has arrived, and with it comes one of my favorite OCCD traditions—our Annual Summer Meeting. This year's conference, taking place July 22-23 in Columbus, brings together timely topics, innovative ideas, and opportunities to reconnect with colleagues who share a passion for strengthening Ohio's communities.

We will begin by focusing on the fundamentals that keep our programs strong. The Ohio Department of Development will kick off the conference with a session on policies and procedures best practices, reminding us that effective community development begins with sound administration and strong internal systems. We will also have the opportunity to hear directly from our 2025 Award Recipients and celebrate the incredible work being accomplished across our state.

As federal requirements and funding landscapes continue to evolve, our agenda addresses many of the issues currently facing practitioners. Sessions on Build America, Buy America requirements, legislative updates, and Opportunity Zones will provide practical information and insight into emerging opportunities and challenges.

At the same time, our profession continues to evolve in exciting ways. We will explore how artificial intelligence can help community development professionals work smarter and more efficiently, and we will hear inspiring stories of downtown revitalization efforts that are transforming communities throughout Ohio.

The conference will also encourage us to think differently about partnerships and community investment. Presentations on engaging non-traditional developers and leveraging faith, private, and community-based resources remind us that some of our greatest opportunities may come from looking beyond traditional approaches and embracing new collaborations.

Of course, one of the greatest benefits of an OCCD meeting is the opportunity to connect with one another. The networking breaks, reception, and awards dinner provide time to exchange ideas, celebrate accomplishments, and strengthen the relationships that make our organization so valuable.

On a personal note, this newsletter marks my final message to you as Vice President. I have enjoyed helping shape our meetings and working alongside an extraordinary Board and membership that is deeply committed to improving communities across Ohio.

As I transition into the role of President, I do so with gratitude for those who have led before me and excitement for what lies ahead. Community development continues to change, bringing both challenges and opportunities, but I am confident that OCCD will continue to be a place where professionals come together to learn, collaborate, and inspire one another.

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Vice President. I look forward to seeing many of you in Columbus this July and beginning this next chapter together.

Donna D. Everson, Vice President, OCCD
