The Long Slow Exit from My Dad's Ethnic World

When I was conceived eighty years ago in Chicago, my father gave me his world; I have left out my mother's essential participation in the process, because she was from Kentucky via Morgan County in southern Illinois and almost as much a foreigner as I was when she delivered me. Dad's world was an ethnic hodgepodge, in which nearly every European community had its section of the city or neighborhood where their language was spoken and displayed on signs, in newspapers, and even taught in schools.

Toledo Wheel Program - Program Suspended

The City of Toledo, Department of Neighborhoods, Northwest Ohio Development Agency (NODA), and Cherry Street Mission Ministries, have partnered to bring a new program to the City for working families who are without reliable transportation. Franklin County DowntownWorks
In July 2015, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners voted to authorize a new economic development initiative called DowntownWorks. The latest in the Commissioners’ SmartWorks suite of economic development programs, DowntownWorks is a partnership with Heritage Ohio, which works with municipalities all over the state to preserve and revitalize historic downtowns.

The Wisdom of the Old Lady with Cats

Back in the late 1970s, Nina Perkins, the OCCD newsletter editor, helped me to prepare a quarterly report about what was going on at HUD. As the 1980s began, Homeless programs took on more significance and after a trip to New York City, I incorporated comments of our failures to address the problem of the homeless from the perspective of folks living in box and grate hotels on the streets of our cities.

It is hard to believe my children are back in school and football season has started. It seems like we just celebrated the Ohio Conference of Community Development’s 50th anniversary. I enjoyed being part of the celebration in July to recognize this milestone.

Our very first training was Construction Management presented by ICF International in December of 2004. It was a two-day training attended by 60 at the Holiday Inn Worthington which is now Doubletree Worthington. That is your OCCD trivia for the quarter.

Fall Meeting Agenda

The OCCD Fall Quarterly Meeting will be held on October 28 and 29, 2015. Although the 50th Anniversary Celebration is over, we want to continue the momentum from this summer to celebrate the work of OCCD’s community members throughout the coming year.
